Parks & Recreation

Westmoreland County, PA boasts a wide variety of recreational and conservation areas, including dozens of county and state parks, country clubs, state game lands, state forests, and nature preserves. In addition, there are many fine parks and recreation areas maintained by townships and localities. Here we present but a few of the major resources and facilities that will help you enjoy the outdoors in Westmoreland County.
 

  • The Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation encompasses nine diversified parks and two trails maintained to provide visitors with a wide variety of benefits and experiences. The parks, encompassing over 2,700 acres of land, are open year round providing walking and hiking trails, picnic and play areas, recreation programs, fishing areas, active sports facilities, as well as plenty of open fields, forests, and streams for you to discover.

  • Hempfield Park is located in northern Hempfield Township just off Route 66, 4 miles north of Greensburg. Covering 94.5 acres, the park features a one mile walking track, lighted tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, baseball fields, horseshoe pits, a bocce court, and 5 handicapped accessible pavilions for rent.   • Latrobe Parks & Recreation sees as its mission to provide a variety of safe, modern, affordable parks & recreation facilities, programs and services that will enhance the quality of life by promoting good health and well being for the citizens of Latrobe.

  • With 1,200 acres, including a 78 acre lake, Keystone State Park is great for family vacations year-round. Camping, modern cabins, trails, and a swimming beach provide an ideal setting for a summer outing. The park is off Route 981 south of route 22 in New Alexandria.

  • Laurel Summit in Westmoreland County provides a scenic picnic area 2,739 feet above sea level operated by the Bureau of State Parks. The 6-acre park includes picnic tables and a pavilion, water and provides trailhead parking for Spruce Flats bog and Wolf Rocks Trail.

  • Linn Run State Park is 612 acres on the western side of Laurel Mountain and borders Forbes State Forest. A mixed hardwood and evergreen forest make this park a scenic place for picnicking, hiking, and cabin rentals. Linn Run is an excellent trout stream complete with its own small waterfall, Adams Falls.

Theater

Live Theater and Dinner Theater are well represented in Westmoreland County, and the variety of performances, from concerts featuring the likes of Wayne Newton and Rickie Lee Jones to lively musicals, comedies, and dramas ensures that there is something for everyone throughout the year.

Located on 21 West Otterman Street in Greensburg, PA, and home to the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, The Palace Theatre has been a major force in Westmoreland County's cultural scene for generations. Many of the headline performances in Westmoreland County occur here.

The mission of the Apple Hill Playhouse is to preserve and advance the traditions of live theatre through entertainment and education. With both children’s and adult seasons, acting classes, and a dinner package arrangement with the Lamplighter Restaurant, Apple Hill Playhouse has become a Westmoreland County tradition.

Greensburg Civic Theatre is now in its 52nd season. One of only a few long-established, volunteer-based, community theatre organizations in Westmoreland County, Greensburg Civic Theatre is a non-profit corporation founded to provide a forum for local actors and theatre craftsmen, including costumers, set builders, and lighting and sound technicians.

In its 58th season, New Kensington Civic Theatre is a community theater that performs a wide variety of musicals and plays throughout the year.

Other Westmoreland County theaters of note are the Geyer Performing Arts Center, a turn-of-the-century theater with live shows every month 724-887-0887; Saint Vincent Summer Theater 724-537-8900; Seton Hill University Reeves Theater 724-838-4241; and the Valley Players of Ligonier.

Westmoreland Museum of Art

Take a fascinating look at American history through the eyes of great American artists at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Located in Greensburg, PA the WMAA presents a distinctive collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and more that describe the heritage of our nation and of the Southwestern Pennsylvania region.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley is located at One Boucher Lane and Route 711 South in Ligonier. This museum, which has affiliate locations in Altoona, Johnstown, and Loretto, exists to preserve, exhibit, and advance American art and is dedicated to making its programs and activities accessible to the people of the southwestern area of central Pennsylvania. The museum mounts exhibitions designed to evoke an interest in and an understanding and appreciation of American art.

Exhibitions at the Alex Fletcher Memorial Art Center are scheduled regularly throughout the year, and offer a wide range of creative effort. From full time professional artists to first showings by students, the results are often intriguing, beautiful, and fun.

Crowd at Arts and Heritage Festival

Westmoreland County lies at the heart of the Laurel Highlands and enjoys a thriving tourism industry. There is truly something for everyone. Historic sites and battlefields, architectural masterpieces, hundreds of miles of trails for bikers and hikers, museums, amusement parks, skiing, golf, and more. The nationally acclaimed Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival offers the best in visual and live performing arts, traditional and fine crafts, cultural heritage activities, humanities, and exciting ethnic foods, providing something for everyone’s tastes.

A tradition for more than 20 years, the Delmont Apple ‘N Arts Festival is an outstanding fall tradition, another great event in Westmoreland County. The Delmont Apple ‘N Arts Festival is held each year at the Shields Farm in Delmont, PA.

With over than 3,000 ways to compete, Westmoreland County’s agricultural prowess is on display at the Westmoreland County Fair, where 18,000 ribbons and $35,000 in premium and prize money is awarded to exhibitors.

With exciting rides, 14 thrilling water slides, 2 roller coasters, and seven theme areas of fun, Idlewild Park and Soak Zone is what family fun is all about.

Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, Ligonier Beach features a sandy beach and a restaurant with weekly entertainment, as well as one of the largest pools in the state. For information, call 724-238-9551.

Located in Champion, PA, a stones throw outside Westmoreland County, Seven Springs Mountain Resort offers the widest range of terrain and lifts in Pennsylvania. Rated by Ski Magazine as one of the top 5 resorts in the east, Seven Springs offers 275 acres of skiing terrain.

Overly's Country Christmas is a beautifully lighted Christmas village.  Drive or walk through Overly's to visit the sites, sounds, smells of a family holiday tradition.  Local crafts and gifts, a bonfire, Christmas carolers, homemade kettle corn, fudge, and cookies add to the fun for the whole family. Train buffs will want to see the new G-scale model train.

Snow on Trees

SeaBase, located at 770 East Pittsburgh Street, in Greensburg, PA, is an entertainment center offering an indoor playground, a miniature golf course, laser tag, video arcade, and more.
