Affected By Epilepsy? Support and Help Now Available Through Excela Health for Individuals, Families and Caregivers

Epilepsy and seizures affect more than 3 million Americans of all ages at an estimated annual health care cost of $12.5 billion in direct and indirect costs. Approximately 200,000 new cases of seizures and epilepsy occur each year. To help support individuals, families and caregivers affected by this condition, Excela Health is hosting a new Epilepsy Education and Support Group. The group will be led by parent and longtime advocate Helen Webb Mucci, who has worked closely with the Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania for the past five years. The group will offer a safe environment to meet and share with others experiencing similar health, education and social concerns.  Each meeting will include a support group component and during select months, will feature an educational forum on alternative therapies. The inaugural program will be held 10:00a.m. to Noon, May 3, Westmoreland Hospital and will include a discussion on “Vagus Nerve Stimulation.”   Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is designed to prevent seizures by sending regular, mild pulses of electrical energy to the brain via the vagus nerve. These pulses are supplied by a device similar to a pacemaker. Sometimes referred to as a “pacemaker for the brain,” the device is placed under the skin on the chest wall and a wire runs from it to the vagus nerve in the neck. The vagus nerve is part of the autonomic nervous system, which controls functions of the body that are not under voluntary control, such as the heart rate. The vagus nerve passes through the neck as it travels between the chest and abdomen and the lower part of the brain. A second educational forum will be held 10:00a.m. to Noon, Sept. 27, Westmoreland Hospital, when the Ketogenic Diet will be explored. Additional support group meetings are scheduled 6:30p.m. to 8:00p.m., July 17, Latrobe Hospital and Dec. 4, Westmoreland Hospital. Registration is required for all programs.

To register or for information on other support groups, classes and community education, contact Excela Health’s Call Center toll free, 1-877-771-1234.
