Westmoreland County
Agricultural Land Preservation
Westmoreland County’s Agricultural Heritage
is Worth Preserving!
Today you will find a new
category in our InWestmoreland listings, and a
new web page, one focused on preserving
Westmoreland County’s rich agricultural
heritage. The new category is Agriculture. Our
county has great strengths not only in industry,
retail, and tourism services, but also in our
locally produced agricultural products and farm
markets. Leading the way to preserve and promote
this invaluable resource is the Westmoreland
County Agricultural Land Preservation Program.
We encourage you to visit their new listing with
us under Agriculture, or visit their web page
directly at
www.wcalp.org.
In addition to information about WCALP, you will
also find links to some of the areas finest
local farm markets, like Schramm Farms &
Orchards, where three generations of the Schramm
family have grown quality fruits and vegetables,
as well as their famous locally grown turkeys.
Or if finding healthy, natural, and certified
organic foods is your concern, visit the website
of Friendship Farms. You’ll find everything from
a small fruits farm that has been featured on
the Food Network to lamb products the world’s
greatest chefs call “America’s Best.” It’s all
in Westmoreland County, and you can learn more
about it here on InWestmoreland.
The Westmoreland County Agricultural Land
Preservation Program was developed in 1990 to
conserve and protect agricultural lands and
assure that farmers in this county have
sufficient acreage to provide farm products for
the people of Westmoreland County and the
Commonwealth. Administration of this program is
under the direction of the Westmoreland County
Agricultural Land Preservation Board, who make
it their purpose to protect viable agricultural
lands by acquiring agricultural conservation
easements which prevent the development or
improvement of the land for any purpose other
than agricultural production.
Pennsylvania leads the nation in the total
number of farms and total acres preserved for
agriculture, and Westmoreland County is
committed to conserve its local farmland
resources. Today in the County there are 18
townships with nearly 80,000 acres enrolled in
the agricultural security area program. You can
do your part by buying locally produced
agricultural products, supporting your local
farm markets, and encouraging locally elected
officials to support the protection of our
valuable farmland.
