Fontana’s Cafe

Only the best in homemade food and hometown service.

Fontana’s Cafe in North Huntingdon offers an upscale eatery in a casual environment. Here, dining is a relaxing, enjoyable experience. Owners Jim and Nancy Bortz want to be known for their food as well as for their family oriented atmosphere, with a goal to become the best along the strip, from Jeannette to North Versailles.

Stop in to enjoy Prime Rib at its best, Jambalaya Pasta, Carbonara, Shrimp Scampi, or Fontana’s Original Spaghetti. But don’t pass up the many appetizers, like Bruchetta made with marinated tomatoes tossed with garlic, olive oil, and a special blend of spices served on toasted bread. Or enjoy Fontana’s Peppers, with your choice of hot or green peppers drizzled with olive oil and topped with garlic and Fontenalla cheese, then broiled until the cheese takes on a golden hue. Homemade Potato Chips are always a favorite, and at Fontana’s Cafe your choices include sour cream & chives, plain, seasoned, or garlic. From sandwich platters to pizza and stromboli, the folks at Fontana’s Cafe are proud of Chef Debbie and her experienced staff. All dishes are homemade on the site, including salad dressings and soup.

At Fontana’s Cafe, you will be joining fellow diners from the surrounding area and from as far away as Latrobe, Greensburg, Irwin, and Delmont, a clientele that has really begun to grow as the reputation of this family restaurant and its great food has spread across Westmoreland County.

A stop in the lounge reveals that this “sports bar” oriented taproom maintains both a casual and family oriented atmosphere, where the patrons know one another’s names and the owners can be found conversing on the subject of the day or making certain their customers are being well served. Guest bar tenders have been known to stop by, including Roberto Clemente Jr., who has promised to return.

After five months of renovation and remodeling, Fontana’s Cafe opened under its new ownership on December 19th, 2003. With little fanfare and no advertising, the quality of the food and service spoke for itself, and Fontana’s has been busy ever since.

“This is all new to Nancy and me,” Jim Bortz explained. “My background, for over 34 years, has been as a director of production at a manufacturing facility. I traveled extensively in Europe, and among the many things I learned was how Europeans have maintained dining as a social event. You relax and dine, without hurry, in a casual and friendly environment. That is what we want for Fontana’s. You are never hurried along, and our goal is not to turn tables quickly.”

So well has this philosophy caught on that several Bridge Clubs now make the journey to Fontana’s two or three times per week, stopping in for lunch and staying for hours of pleasant conversation and play.

“Our experience comes from being on the other side of the table,” Jim continued. “We have dined at countless restaurants over the years, and we had stopped here more than thirty years ago when it was originally owned by the Fontanas. At the time it was a great experience, a friendly, neighborhood restaurant that couldn’t be beat. When we purchased Fontana’s Cafe, Nancy and I made a pact that we would revive that atmosphere, the atmosphere we loved and respected.”

Any day of the week you can find Jim’s daughter, son, niece, nephew, and sister-in-law at work, or two grandchildren visiting. The rest of the staff is also thought of by Jim and Nancy as an extended family, a part of the dream that brings to North Huntingdon a great, clean, family-oriented, restaurant that is sure to please and become one of your favorite stops once you make it a point to stop by and experience good food, a relaxing time, and the great people who are ready to serve you.

Remember, Fontana’s Cafe in North Huntingdon is the home of Mary’s Famous Italian Roast Beef, Nan’s Hot Sausage Hoagie, and THE BIG FISH, a hand-breaded, deep fried cod on a fresh hoagie you have to experience for yourself. There is also a special children’s menu for those ten and under.

Come to Fontana’s Cafe for the best in service and great family food. Relax, you don’t have anything to do but eat, drink, and enjoy!
