Westmoreland Human Opportunities, Inc.
Second Annual Wine Tasting

WHO to Host 2nd Annual Wine Tasting Event

Westmoreland Human Opportunities, Inc. (WHO) is hosting its second annual wine tasting event at the Westmoreland Museum of Art, on Friday, May 14 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The event showcases various wines from Pennsylvania, including Arrowhead Wine Cellars, DeAndrea Wines, and Spirits and Raspberry Acres. Along with the featured wines, hors d’oeuvres, music, and a silent auction, the evening includes “Along the Lincoln Highway,” an exhibition of paintings, photographs, and works on paper by both national and regional artists that depict life along the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor (US Route 30) in Pennsylvania, the first transcontinental highway from Atlantic City, NJ to San Francisco, CA.

Tickets are available in advance for a $30 donation. Proceeds from this event supplement WHO’s programming efforts. For ticket information, please call 724-834-1260.

Westmoreland Human Opportunities, Inc., a private, non-profit human service corporation, has been the designated Community Action Agency for Westmoreland County since 1980. Community Action Agencies came to fruition in 1964, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act and declared war on poverty. At that time, Community Action Agencies were designed to help the poor break the cycle of poverty and advance to a better, fuller, and more productive life. 40 years later, the war is not yet over and WHO is working harder than ever to eliminate the factors that cause poverty. The agency consists of 193 full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees and has a direct service budget of nearly $11 million from federal, state, and local funding sources.

Through our many social service programs, WHO addresses the diverse needs of low-income families, children, and communities. The agency provides assistance to more than 9,000 Westmoreland County residents annually. WHO provides a variety of services for individuals and families that include:

  • Housing Programs that assist with securing permanent housing, training to achieve purchasing a home, and rehabilitation of homes.
  • Child Development Programs, such as Head Start and Early Head Start that emphasize educational and family development.
  • Mental Health Services that provide support for persons in need in a variety of ways, including telephone hotline, face-to-face intervention, short-term stabilization, and long-term reintegration services. If you or someone you know is in need of mental health assistance, please call the Crisis Hotline at 1-800-836-6010.
  • Self-Sufficiency Program that includes the Family Savings Account matching savings plan.
  • Emergency Services include assistance to persons in need, including mortgage payment assistance, energy assistance programs, an emergency food pantry, and a Westmoreland County Food Bank distribution site.
  • Family & Youth Programs are designed to provide a variety of services to families to help deal with parenting issues, anger, conflict resolution, and supervised visitation.
  • The Supported Work Program helps adults find employment by matching their skills and abilities to employer needs through job skill assessments and classroom instruction. Eligible clients must either receive a form of public assistance or have less than a 9th grade education.
  • Community Building Program initiates and expands public and private sector partnerships by organizing and evaluating community needs and creating tailored strategies for community development and economic growth.

As Westmoreland Human Opportunities, Inc. works towards its 25th anniversary of serving as the county’s Community Action Agency, we anticipate many changes and improvements as we continue to strive to win the war on poverty.
