Find Westmoreland
FindWestmoreland.org is a new website
linking
Westmoreland County residents to information
about health, human, social, and community-based
resources in Westmoreland County.
More and more,
Westmoreland County information is going online.
This fall, InWestmoreland.com celebrates two
years of extraordinary growth and success.
Earlier in 2004, Westmoreland County launched a
completely revised and updated government
services site at www.co.westmoreland.pa.us. Even
neighborhood websites such as
MyNorthhuntingdon.com have proven popular. Now,
an essential new website has been added to the
mix. FindWestmoreland.org is an Internet based
listing of health, human, social, civic,
governmental, faith-based, and community-based
resources throughout Westmoreland County.
Whether your need is to find information on
anything from Adoption Services to Employment or
from Nursing Homes to Transportation,
FindWestmoreland.org quickly connects you with
the contact information you need, including
links to available websites.
You can locate information on FindWestmoreland
by browsing through easy to use directories
(organized alphabetically), or by typing the
subject of your search into the online search
field. FindWestmoreland also boasts a community
calendar, guided tour, and a useful documents
section, allowing users to download items such
as enrollment applications, newsletters, and
informative articles.
In an effort to keep information up to date,
FindWestmoreland has been designed to allow each
agency to add its own information into the
system and to update it as necessary. This makes
FindWestmoreland not only a useful resource for
the public, but an impressive research tool for
the many community services throughout the
county, allowing them to find all existing and
new organizations serving the county, and to
have access to the latest information supplied
directly from those organizations. In fact,
every 90 days, those participating in the site
receive an email reminding them to log in an
update their listings.
FindWestmoreland.org is a project of the Health
& Welfare Council of Westmoreland County, and
its growth and development have been championed
by the Director of the HWCWC, Jack Wagner. “We
have published a directory of services for the
county since 1961, a project which required more
than 9 months of effort each year and was often
outdated by the time it went to print,” said
Jack Wagner. “FindWestmoreland.org brings the
idea of a directory into the Internet age, when
even those without computers can stop in their
local library to visit FindWestmoreland.org on
publicly accessible computers..”
The concept for FindWestmoreland originated in
1997 when the Health and Welfare Council of
Westmoreland County identified several
situations existing within the non-profit arena
and in the human services delivery system. These
included:
-
Multiple
organizations maintaining the same data and
duplicating efforts and expenditures.
-
A lack of awareness
of the total spectrum of community resources
available, their locations, service areas,
and eligibility requirements.
-
No effective or
affordable method of communicating change
between service providers.
-
Difficult access to
information – those most in need of
information often had no knowledge of where
to go or how to find needed referrals.
FindWestmoreland
addresses these issues by providing a “one-stop
shop” for both the public and agencies in search
of health, social, civic, governmental,
faith-based, and community-based services.
Major sponsors of FindWestmoreland include The
Community Foundation of Westmoreland County,
Westmoreland County Food Bank, Inc., the Untied
Way of Westmoreland County, Seton Hill Child
Services, Inc., Adelphoi Village, Child Care
Information Services of Westmoreland County,
Westmoreland Alcohol and Drug Commission, The
Westmoreland Trust, and Southwestern
Pennsylvania Human Services, Inc.
The Health and Welfare Council of Westmoreland
County has grown tremendously since its first
meeting in the fall of 1958 at the Easter Seal
Society office on North Maple Avenue in
Greensburg. Even from that early date, the
underlying goals that would result in
FindWestmoreland.org had been identified. .
Those goals included:
-
Learning more about
the services available in the area.
-
Getting to know and
understand those services and the personnel
delivering them.
-
Working to prevent
duplication of services.
-
Sponsoring and
encouraging new services in order to meet
the needs of the area.
-
Compiling a directory
of all Health and Welfare services in the
area.
The long-term success of
FindWestmoreland rests with the ability to
continue to identify and develop partner
organizations that will provide funding in
support of FindWestmoreland, as well as
continuing to spread the word throughout
Westmoreland County of this exciting new online
resource. The more residents and agencies that
find the website useful, the more its success
will be assured.
InWestmoreland.com is pleased to provide a link
