The third division is Duncan Tax Accounting.
According to John, they found themselves providing financial assistance to all
of their insurance clients and preparing their taxes as well. As a result, they
got CPAs involved and the tax and accounting division of Duncan Financial was
born.
The Duncan Financial Group originally was
originally known as the Duncan Insurance Agency. John and David's father had
focused the business around insurance, which originally sold Met Life Insurance.
After partnering with Jim Hutchins in 1972, the business starting growing. In
1978 Duncan bought out his partner. Then David joined the business after
graduating from Point Park College with a business administration degree in
1979. Shortly after, in 1983, John Duncan graduated from Indiana University of
Pennsylvania also with a degree in business administration. Together they turned
the family business into an all- inclusive financial planning center.
"My brother started the financial division
because of the need that came from our clients," said John. "We never wanted to
limit ourselves and we found that the financial aspect was one area that we
could expand upon, especially with my brother's background."
The business has remained in Westmoreland County
throughout its history. In 1984 it moved to its current location. The Duncans
remodeled the second floor in 1994 and in 2003 purchased another building to
hold the finances and pension information. There is also another location in
Monroeville. John said that more than half of their business is from
Westmoreland County and that the Duncan Financial Group will remain loyal to the
community.
In 1996 the company merged with Laukas and
Diffenderfer, later to also merge with Kraft, Kellogg and Patterson. With about
60 employees today, the Duncan Financial Group will always maintain its presence
in the Irwin area of Westmoreland County.
"We have grown up in this area and love it
here," said John Duncan. "We like working with the community and will help in
any way we can."
Three years ago John Duncan was voted to
the Norwin Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors and is part of the Community
Superstar Campaign. He has served on the golf, picnic, dinner, and sponsorship
committee. In addition he has been the vice president of the Norwin Public
Library Board of Trustees for four years and has been a member of the Lions Club
for 18 years and served as president.
