The Summer Place

The Taste of Summer Found at The Summer Place

One of the best parts of summer is enjoying barbequed food. And that is exactly what Westmoreland County residents can find at The Summer Place, located on Frye Farm Road in Greensburg. The Summer Place is both an outdoor and indoor restaurant with a menu pleasing to everyone’s tastes.

Owner David Davis said that among the most popular items available are the barbeque sandwiches and barbequed chicken.

“We make our own sauce and sell it to customers by the quart,” said Davis. “We even have people come from out of state for it. We have hot, mild, and medium.”

Customers come not only for sauce and barbequed chicken. On weekends the popular Summer Place is crowded with people ordering from a varied menu. Dinner items include ribs, New York Strip Steak, chicken, wings, and pork chops. Ribs can be purchased by the pound, and chicken by the piece. All dinners include a roll and two side orders. Complementing the dinners are salads, sandwiches, side orders, and even seafood.

Available salads include tossed salad, grilled chicken salad, grilled steak salad, chicken tender salad, and shrimp salad. Sandwiches include ham barbeque, beef barbeque, pork barbeque, ham and cheese, boneless breast, hot sausage, kielbasa, steak burger, hamburger, hot dog, rib-eye steak, hot roast beef, submarine sandwich, and Philly cheese steak with peppers and onions. Seafood items include large shrimp, crab cakes, and eight-ounce cod fish sandwiches.

Side orders include wedge fries, applesauce, baked beans, coleslaw, pasta salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, fruit salad, corn, baked potato, onion rings, macaroni and cheese, pepper slaw, mashed potatoes, soup, cucumber salad, hot cheese balls, fried zucchini, fried apple, and fried mushrooms.

Children and senior citizens also have a menu to pick from that includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, and grilled cheese.

In addition to this large menu there are also ice cream sundaes available in chocolate, strawberry, or caramel.

The menu and the food is hand selected by Davis, who runs the business within his family.

“I really search hard for my meat through the local suppliers. We use black angus beef for burgers and steaks,” said Davis.

The Summer Place is very accommodating as far as the customers’ schedule. You can call in and pick up an order or the order can be delivered if it is within a five-mile radius. If you are eating at the Summer Place, orders take approximately seven to eight minutes to prepare. There are picnic benches under the pavilion and in the lawn, as well as an enclosed room called the Summer Room. This room can be reserved for special occasions Monday through Saturday. Customers are welcome to bring their own beer or wine to enjoy with their meal, however rules forbid them to leave with an open container.
Davis has owned The Summer Place since 1993 when he and his father Robert purchased it. The business itself was established 20 years prior. Since 1994, Davis has had complete control of the business, thanks to help from his four children and other family members.

“This business will always remain in Westmoreland County because I really like living in this area. We still have a lot of open space and the people are great,” said Davis.

The Summer Place offers a change from fast food restaurants and can relieve a night of cooking at home. It takes the taste of summer and captures it in the barbequing of the food. Be sure to visit this one-of-a-kind restaurant before the summer ends. The Summer Place is open from May until September on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
