Shared Commitment Enriches Region
The revitalization of the Downtown
Greensburg Cultural and Historical
District scored another impressive
victory recently with the completion of
the Stark Block Project. The restoration
project began in 1996 when the Werrin
family generously donated the James
Building located at 33 West Otterman
Street to The Westmoreland Trust. When
the Trust later purchased the adjoining
Stark Hotel, the opportunities made
possible by combining the two properties
soon became clear. The buildings were
combined through the use of a common
elevator and stairwell, and the interior
was completely refurbished. The Stark
Block building is now home to a variety
of non-profit organizations and local
businesses.
This restoration effort was brought to
life through a partnership between the
Westmoreland Trust and First
Commonwealth Bank. The Westmoreland
Trust is a non-profit organization whose
mission is to improve the quality of
living in the Westmoreland County region
through the support and enhancement of
the region’s cultural and historical
assets. The Trust also plays a large
role in assisting other cultural groups
and educational initiatives to meet a
broad range of community-based goals.
First Commonwealth Bank brings with it a
rich tradition of community banking.
Since 1983 First Commonwealth has grown
to its present size of $5.2 billion in
assets through mergers with 11 community
banks. As the bank continues to grow,
great pride remains in its community
bank heritage. That heritage and
tradition has resulted in a strong focus
on
making its communities better places in
which to live and work.
Although the Stark Block Project serves
as a true success story, it is not the
only success story that the Westmoreland
Trust and First Commonwealth share. The
two organizations also joined forces in
the restoration of the Train Station and
the Palace Theatre. The Train Station at
Greensburg is an architectural historic
landmark on the National Register of
Historic Places. The Palace Theatre, in
addition to serving as home to the
Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, Laurel
Ballet, and Westmoreland County
performances of the River City Brass
Band, also presents a variety of
nationally and internationally acclaimed
performers. Both renovation projects
have helped to further promote
Westmoreland County’s economic and
tourism growth.
The success of the Stark Block Project,
the Train Station, and the Palace
Theatre is the result of a shared
commitment by the Westmoreland Trust and
First Commonwealth Bank to continually
enrich the lives of the people of this
region.
