Why Westmoreland?
In this issue of Inspiring
Times InWestmoreland we are
sponsoring a writing
contest. Our goal is to
highlight the outstanding
qualities of our county and
to showcase local writing
talent, perhaps yours!
In addition to the winner
receiving a $100 check and a
certificate of
accomplishment, the winning
entry will enjoy publication
both in a future issue of
Inspiring Times InWestmoreland and on online
at InWestmoreland.com.
Our theme is “Why
Westmoreland?” and the
structure of each entry
should conform to the
following idea: you are
writing a letter to a recent
college graduate, a friend
who is deciding between two
job offers, one in Hawaii
and one in Westmoreland
County. What advice do you
give? Why might Westmoreland
County provide an equal or
better quality of life than
Hawaii?
At first you might think,
“Hawaii is a paradise, who
wouldn’t want to go there?”
And while you might not find
many things to criticize
about those beautiful
pacific islands, a little
research can provide some
interesting comparisons.
Consider items like cost of
living, climate, leisure
activities, crime rate,
culture, and the qualities
of the people. There may not
be much to pan about Hawaii,
but how many equally strong,
positive values can you find
in Westmoreland County?
Entries should be
typewritten, double-spaced,
and 500 words or less. The
deadline for entries is July
23rd, 2004. Judging will be
based on originality,
clarity, and quality of
writing. The contest is open
to all age groups. One entry
per person. Please mail your
entry to:
