Apple Hill Goes Into the Woods

Put together a hip-hop witch, a philandering Prince Charming, a bloodthirsty Little Red Riding Hood and you’ve got an evening of great entertainment as Apple Hill Playhouse presents Into the Woods. But, this fractured fairy tale by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine also has its serious side.

In true fairy tale form, the crazy characters have their wishes granted by the end of Act I, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later. What begins as an irreverent fairy tale becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility.

Director Jim Walters of Apollo is pleased to have the directorial team from 2002's production of "Fiddler On The Roof" reunited for "Into The Woods." The team includes choreographer, Laura Wurzell, of Delmont, and his wife, Michelle Walters as musical director, keyboardist, and orchestra conductor. "This talented and enthusiastic cast brings together students from a wide variety of university theatre programs, high-school students planning to enter theatre programs in the future, as well as those who hail from other professions and simply love to perform in their spare time. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with them."

The cast of Into the Woods includes: Maria D’Ascenzo, Lauren Nestor, Jolene Stouffer, Ryan Hadbavny, Rob Owens, Ron Rukenbrod, Meghan O’Halloran, Leyna McCarthy and Rori Aiello of the Irwin/North Huntingdon area; Beverly Price, Kevin O’Leary, Michael Rozell of Greensburg; Elisa Anderson of Delmont, Elyssa Book of Murrysville, Matthew Semler of Glenshaw and Mallory Mousseau, Ryan Foy, Nick Oleson and Katie Kerr of Pittsburgh.

Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine runs July 8-24 at Apple Hill Playhouse in Delmont. Curtain is at 8 p.m. for evening performances and 2 p.m. for the matinees. Call the Apple Hill Box Office for tickets at 724-468-5050 or log on to www.applehillplayhouse.org.
