Giant Eagle Food Share

Giant Eagle and the Westmoreland County Food Bank are teaming up along with volunteers from the Westmoreland County Girl Scouts and UPS to help feed the hungry of Westmoreland County. The Fall Food Share Food Drive will be held the weekend of October 9th and 1Oth at all Giant Eagle Supermarkets. Girl Scout volunteers will be on hand to accept non-perishable food items and with the help of Giant Eagle employees will package donations to be picked up by UPS volunteers and taken to the Westmoreland County Food Bank for distribution.

The Ligonier Giant Eagle will be holding its food drive the weekend of Oct. 2nd & 3rd as not to interfere with the Fort Ligonier Days celebration.

Monetary donations can be made with scan coupons at the registers throughout the week. For every $1.00 donated, $5.00 in groceries is purchased by the Food Bank to help replenish the food supplies.

Josh Burd, from the Westmoreland County Food Bank has been working along with Denise Martin from Giant Eagle to coordinate the Westmoreland County Store's Food Drive. All Giant Eagle stores will be holding the drive in their various counties to support their local Food Banks.

In Westmoreland County, 10.2% of the population is living below the poverty line. Numerous others receive Emergency Food Assistance but are not accounted for. Of the 18,000 people needing help, about 7,500 are children under the age of 18.

The Mission of the WCFB Is to serve the needs of hungry people in Westmoreland County through the acquisition and distribution of food in collaboration with the network of community agencies, and to act as an advocate on their behalf in ways aimed at helping to relieve the causes of hunger. Volunteers are an essential part of the WCFB. Skills, talent, and time are extremely valuable in order to make the Missions Statement a reality. For more information you can check the website www.wcfb.net.

So many of our neighbors depend on the Food Bank for nutrition and help feeding their families. Through the generosity, donations and volunteers of our community we are able to give to others what so many of us take for granted. Please mark your calendars and stop by your local Giant Eagle to make a donation in the drop box or at the registers to support the Westmoreland County Food Bank.

The North Huntingdon Giant Eagle will be holding a Car Cruise to benefit the WCFB on Saturday, Oct, 9th from 5:00pm to 9:00 pm, rain or shine. Admission is a donation or a non perishable food item. For more details, please contact Denise Martin at 724-864-0100.

Thanks to all who help to make this yearly event a huge success.
