The Benefits of Massage
During Pregnancy

Massage therapy has become so mainstream that almost everyone is aware it is not just a luxury used for relaxing, it is a necessity for good health. Studies have proven massage to be beneficial for many health ailments such as chronic muscular problems, joint pain, releasing tension, reducing stress, and helping aid in circulatory issues, to name a few.

More people are becoming aware of the therapeutic effects of one of the newer treatments in massage, pregnancy and infant massage. Massage during pregnancy not only makes the woman feel pampered, it offers physical benefits as well. During a woman’s first trimester, massage can help relieve headaches, help alleviate morning sickness, and reduce fatigue. During the second trimester, it has been proven effective in eliminating leg cramps, soothing sore, aching backs, and stabilizing hormonal levels. During the last phase of pregnancy, the third trimester, massage helps reduce swelling/edema, enhances sleep for you and the baby, relieves pain from varicosities, and prepares the pelvic muscles for the birthing process.

During the entire term of pregnancy, massage stimulates blood flow, which can result in the prevention of anemia. An increase in muscle tone and flexibility often occurs, which results in less episodic muscle and leg spasms. Massage also stimulates the lymphatic system, which increases immunity and aids in the removal of excess toxins.

In addition, massage relieves everyday tension and stress, and the general aches that are associated with pregnancy. After the baby arrives, continuing to receive massage treatments is essential in restoring muscle tone in the abdomen area and repositioning the pelvis. Touch is very important part of bonding with your baby. A certified therapist can instruct you on massaging your baby at home.

Women with a normal, low-risk pregnancy can benefit greatly from massage. In most cases, treatments are recommended every four weeks. Always consult with your midwife or doctor before beginning a massage therapy program.
