Belief Systems Affect Success

Do you have a tagline and, if you do, does it convey the right message or image? After much trial and error, I finally settled on Unleash – Accelerate – Triumph. I have observed over the years that one’s beliefs and assumptions play a major role in forming their attitudes and behaviors. I have met many business owners and sales professionals who believe they can’t successfully cold call and can’t ask for referrals and can’t obtain much business from networking.

They finally talk themselves into the waiting arms of marketing consultants who are only too ready to create all kinds of fancy brochures, newsletters, articles, advertising specialties, etc., and sales trainers who are only too ready to teach them their particular sales methodologies. In other words, they put their future into the hands of someone else that they hope can help but who is unable to guarantee success for obvious reasons.

My first mission in working with someone is to enable him or her to “unleash” themselves from their non-supportive belief systems. They must begin to believe they can do anything they want to if they are willing to use proven processes and make a commitment to being successful. They must adopt new beliefs and behaviors – “think outside the box”. However, the new beliefs and behaviors must be the right beliefs and behaviors.

One of the curses in these modern times is the “Pepsi-Generation” Belief System that leads individuals to think they can achieve fantastic success overnight if only they can write the right software package, or create the right widget, or whatever. The problem is that, every once in awhile, someone experiences fantastic success with his or her software package, etc. and this achievement feeds the belief that this kind of success is easily available to everyone. Alas, if life were only so simple.

There is no real substitute for taking time to do adequate analysis and planning. Perform a “SWOT” (“Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis to make sure you are not flying blind. Too many business owners and sales professionals are busy working in their business and spend little, to no time working on their business.

I am Dan Kusner, President of Optimum Business Development, LP and I work with serious sales professionals and business owners who want to target qualified prospects and close more and better business. If you would like to become a more effective sales professional, please call me at 724-325-5698.
