Slimming Supplements

According to a new study of 15,000 Americans, those who were overweight or obese at age 45 gained the least amount of additional weight during middle age – ages 45 to 54 – if they supplemented with chromium, multivitamins, and vitamins B6 and B12. Researchers from the Fred Hutchinson cancer research center in Seattle, WA, analyzed data collected in the Vitamins and Lifestyle (VITAL) study, which surveyed men and women aged 50 to 76, to determine their use of vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements, as well as dietary habits, medical history, physical activity, and weight change over a 10 year-period.

The researchers reviewed 15,000 questionnaires from respondents whose average age was 55. Researchers narrowed their focus to the effects of chromium, fiber tablets, ginkgo biloba, multi vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, soy, St. John’s Wort, and vitamins B6 and B12. The scientists correlated the use of these supplements with changes in body weight that occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. Those who took chromium, multivitamins, and vitamins B6 and B12 in particular had less weight gain than did those who took other supplements, or who took no supplements.

The researchers also found that female participants gained an average of 16 pounds from the age 25 to 54, and then began to lose weight at about the age 55. Male participants gained an average of 10 pounds from the age of 25 to 45, stabilized from the age 46 to 54, and then also began to lose weight after the age 55.

The findings support prior research showing that chromium helps control appetite and maintain blood sugar levels. The authors also believe that B-vitamin supplements may correct micronutrient deficiencies, which may help reduce calorie consumption. In their next study, the researchers hope to determine the impact of specific supplements on weight gain during various life stages.
