The Healing Process and the Role of the Central Nervous
System
Chiropractic focuses on the importance of proper
alignment of vertebrae in the spine. Many people think this
healing deal only with the back. Nothing could be further
from the truth.
Chiropractic has very little to do with the back, but
everything to do with the overall functioning of the body.
Therefore, as an increasing number of individuals today take
more responsibility for their health care through healthy
eating and exercise regimens, it is important to remember
the nervous system truly integrates all aspects of the
body's health.
A critical component of the human body, the nervous
system is so important that it needs protection. Thus, the
brain is encased in the skull and the spinal cord is
surrounded by a bony canal composed of 24 movable bones
(vertebrae) resting on the pelvis. The brain (the master
control system of the body) sends an electrochemical charge
(impulse) down the spinal cord. Billions of nerve fibers,
traveling down the spinal cord and exiting between the
vertebrae, separate into smaller fibers, feeding every part
of the body and supplying it with information in the form of
energy and life.
Without these nerves, we would not be able to see, hear,
touch, tasted or smell, nor would we be able to feel hot,
cold, pain or pleasure. The nerves also regulate breathing,
sweating, shivering, internal organ function, heartbeat,
digestion, blood flow to organs, and all other functions of
the body.
The human body must have a healthy nervous system to
facilitate the healing process. Without a health nervous
system, the body will weaken and be unable to adapt to
stress, leading to possible increased illness.
