Frick Hospital Aid Society Announces New Scholarship
To recognize the work of junior volunteers at Excela Health Frick
Hospital in a meaningful way while helping these volunteers pursue higher
education, the Frick Hospital Aid Society has announced a new 'Scholarship
Campaign.'
'The goal of the campaign is to encourage young people to consider
volunteerism within the Excela Health setting while offering an opportunity
for health career exploration,' noted Ellen Katter, manager, Volunteer
Services. 'It's a good way to recognize and reward individuals for their
commitment to Excela Health and Frick Hospital.'
Winning the inaugural $500 scholarship was Kathryn Zaksek, 2006
Southmoreland High School graduate and daughter of Nick and Barbara Zaksek,
employees of the Frick Hospital pharmacy and IV team respectively. She will
attend Carlow University in the fall.
'The Frick Hospital Aid Society is pleased to sponsor the new Junior
Volunteer Scholarship Program, which provides an incentive for young people
to experience volunteerism and to know how important it is to help others,'
said Charlotte Kwak, auxiliary president. Added Fear, 'Volunteering is a
wonderful opportunity for young people to observe various health care
related professions to choose a vocation. It is a steppingstone toward a
career.'
Eligibility criteria for the scholarship includes a minimum of 200 hours of
volunteer service to Frick Hospital, 50 hours of which were completed in the
senior year of high school; a grade point average of 3.0, and proof of
enrollment in an accredited institution of high learning. Three references
also are required.
The Frick Hospital Aid Society, in existence since 1902, serves the hospital
by raising funds for various projects, including the new scholarship
program.
