I have been working with midwives for over 26 years and over that time it's
become very clear to me just how special their patient care really is. As a
birth doula (professional labor coach), I get to share in and help with the
wonderful experiences they offer their patients.
Did you know:
1. that your initial interview and exam is often 30
minutes or more?
2. that they take fewer clients so there is a better
level of familiarity?
3. that you'll get a handbook filled with useful
information and guidance about your pregnancy and your care?
4. that every appointment will include plenty of time for
face-to-face dialogue and questions?
5. that they routinely provide you with resources
regarding complimentary care during pregnancy and beyond?
6. that they welcome your interest in and sharing in your
care?
7. that they want partners will be involved in the
pregnancy and birth?
8. they allow extended family to participate (according
to your comfort)?
9. that they expect thorough communication about your
birth philosophy, preferences and priorities?
10. that they will explain anything in detail until you
understand or feel comfortable with the discussion?
11. that they will respect and follow your wishes to the
best of their ability?
12. that they will attend the majority of your birth
offering you guidance and support?
13. that they encourage the use of a woman's natural
resources vs. routine interventions while birthing?
14. that they will offer labor coping skills to help you
through labor?
15. that they do not force their opinions or management
style on you?
16. that they stay after the birth to observe recovery
and bonding?
17. that they maintain your care during surgery even if a
cesarean is indicated?
18. that they often assist with initial breastfeeding and
baby care?
19. that they'll take pictures or record the first cry or
let you take the placenta home?
20. that they'll discharge you sooner from the birth
place if you're medically safe?
21. that they have special arrangement with agencies to
provide follow up home care?
22. that they refer to proven and respected care
providers?
23. that they encourage the use of support groups for
nursing and parenting?
24. that they have better outcomes than obstetricians
(that means, statistically, fewer problems with moms and
babies)?
25. that they really practice as their title implies?
Midwife means 'with woman'!
