Girl Scout Time Capsule
by Cheri Petrini-Hayden
As Laurel Mountain Girl Scout has been sold in an effort for Westmoreland
Council to merge with Keystone Tall Trees Council to better serve Girls, the
Time Capsule buried at the Laurel Mt. Camp had been forgotten. But not in my
mind! I am a LifeTime Member of G.S (I am now 31 years old) and I wanted to
follow through on my promise to retrieve the Capsule even though the
circumstances had changed and the property was now owned by Tom Usher of
U.S. Steel.
My husband and I, along with some dedicated Scouts attempted to dig up the
Capsule at the last campfire, but were not able to get deep enough without
equipment. I decided to call Mr. Usher to tell him of my plight and he
invited us to his gorgeous Pittsburgh office to discuss my plans for an
Event to commemorate the Retrieval.
He was so gracious and happy to see young people who
follow up on their promises. And when he asked me what my
plans were for the Capsule, he was impressed with my idea of
passing this memory down to the next generation of Girl
Scouts and by the fact that attribute much of who I am today
to Scouting and my experiences at LMC (and with these
values, I successfully own and run a national jewelry
wholesale company, Cheridan Couture Jewelry, Inc.).
Now that the Time Capsule was found, we held a catered
Family Picnic on the exact burial date 19 years ago at LMC
(Aug. 9th) to pass this special memory on! What a wonderful
way to close out so many great years to LMC!
