Finding the Right Fit
The Perfect Interior Designer for You
by Teri Waugh
So, you're planning an exciting design or remodeling project. You know how
you're going to use the space, how much you want to spend; and you have a
clear idea of the ambiance you want when it's finished. In order to find the
designer that fits your project, you need to question prospective designers
concerning their:
- Portfolio ' Viewing the designer's
portfolio of recent work gives you an idea of the range
of the designer's skills. Also, request a list of
references - and check them.
- Education ' The training and
background of the designer reveals whether he/she
understands basic building construction - how plumbing
runs in walls, how to find supporting walls ' as well as
other design essentials.
- Affiliations ' Membership in a
professional organization such as the American Society
of Interior Designers (ASID) indicates that the designer
meets certain industry standards.
- Contract ' Carefully review any
contract. The more clearly the information is listed,
the greater the chances that the end product will meet
your expectations. Be clear on the fee structure ' is it
by the hour, or is a percentage added to the cost of
items used?
Finally, find someone with whom you are comfortable, so
that the experience will be as positive as possible.
