Mesotherapy, also known as
Lipo-Dissolve, is a
relatively new technique
designed to treat unwanted
areas of fat. It has
recently become extremely
popular in other areas of
the country and consists of
injections of a medication
into the fat in order to
dissolve or eliminate the
fat in that area.
The procedure is performed
in the office with no need
for anesthesia. It takes
approximately 15 minutes to
perform and can be performed
every 2 to 4 weeks. It is
designed to treat only
moderately sized areas of
fat accumulation and is most
commonly performed on the
abdomen, love handles, inner
thighs, outer thighs and
upper arms. There is no
recovery associated with the
treatment other than a mild
burning sensation for
several hours. The process
can take a couple of months
to complete and the healing
process is not complete
until a couple of months
after the final treatment.
Liposuction is a well-known
surgical procedure that is
also designed to treat
unwanted areas of fat. It
can be performed under local
anesthesia in the office for
small areas of fat
accumulation or under
conscious sedation/general
anesthesia in a hospital or
outpatient surgical center
for larger areas. It can be
performed in any area of the
body and consists of passing
a small canula
(approximately 1/8th of an
inch in diameter) through
the fat multiple times
through several small access
sites in the skin. Recovery
is approximately 1 week and
the healing process can take
a couple of months.
************
There have been some
variations of liposuction
introduced over the last few
years; however the
procedures are very similar.
Ultra-sonic Assisted
Liposuction (also referred
to as Lipo-Selection) was
introduced approximately 10
years ago in order to
facilitate the removal of
fat during liposuction by
simultaneously delivering
sound waves to the tissues.
It can be used anywhere in
the body, but is primarily
indicated in areas that are
more difficult to treat with
traditional liposuction,
such as the chest and upper
back.
Laser liposuction was
introduced more recently;
however, this treatment has
very limited applications.
It is designed to treat only
small areas of fat
accumulation in the office
with local anesthesia. Most
Plastic Surgeons would argue
that the same results can be
achieved with traditional
liposuction in the office
without the added costs of
the laser machine.
The treatment of localized
areas of fat accumulation is
clearly one of the most
commonly performed
procedures in Plastic
Surgery today. Liposuction
still remains the mainstay
of treatment; however,
Mesotherapy will most likely
take over the market as the
treatment of small to
moderate areas of fat
accumulation, as it has in
Europe. The reason for its
popularity in Europe is the
low cost and the short
recovery associated with
Mesotherapy.
