Excela Health Awards Scholarships, Promotes Golden Hour Message for Countering Heart Attack, Stroke

It was standing room only at Excela Health’s Ninth Annual Golden Hour Student Scholarship program. More than 90 students, parents and teachers gathered April 8 at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital to recognize 21 project finalists from nine area high schools.

Angel Palombo, Greater Latrobe High School and Jocelyn Gruskiewicz and Sara Sweeney of Yough High School, share the $1,000 scholarship prizes for their winning projects. Sixteen $100 cash prizes also were awarded to the other finalists.

Participating students represented Derry Area, Greater Latrobe, Greensburg Central Catholic, Greensburg Salem, Jeannette, Ligonier Valley, Mount Pleasant Area and Yough high schools, as well as Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technical Center.

The “Golden Hour” program was conceived in the mid 1990s by retired Latrobe Area Hospital Emergency Department director Richard Kunkle, MD, as a means of educating the public about the critical importance or prompt and professional treatment for someone experiencing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Now under the auspices of Excela Health, the “Golden Hour” program includes a school-based component and a speaker’s bureau.

In the school-based program, students receive classroom instruction, conduct research and develop a “Golden Hour” display. Part of the project includes interviewing five family members regarding their medical history and sharing the importance of the “Golden Hour” message.

In addition to the school programs, free speaker’s bureau presentations are available to churches, organizations and businesses by calling Excela Health’s Call Center, 1-877-771-1234.  “Golden Hour” wallet cards outlining signs and symptoms also are available free of charge.
