Sometimes, I think, we
forget how important it is
to step back and enjoy the
world around us. Every
season is uniquely
magnificent, but as you find
yourself in the midst of the
one called summer, I urge
you to take the time to
revel in its splendors.
Open your windows and let
crickets lull you to sleep.
Enjoy the warm sunlight that
finds its way onto your
cheek at 6:00 am. Be
reminded that it’s Saturday
by the sound of a neighbor’s
lawnmower. Chase the ice
cream truck, even if you
only do it once, and don’t
think about the prices. Skip
stones, or at least try to,
in a lake. Catch fireflies
in an old peanut butter jar,
but don’t forget the holes!
Lay in the grass and count
the clouds without worrying
about getting dirty. Put on
some old shoes and play in
the rain.
As we grow up, as work,
bills and everyday tasks
become constants in our
lives, we tend to forget why
we loved this season so much
as children. It was a time
to play hard and have fun; a
time to let go of worries
and enjoy being alive.
“When did that change?” I
ask my grown-up self.
Something tells me it never
did. I think I just forgot
to remember how to enjoy it.
