Remember the feeling of
anticipation you had as a
child as the holiday season
approached each year?
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and
New Years are arguably the
three biggest holidays of
the year and they occur in a
span of only five weeks.
No wonder they can be
stressful for you and your
senior loved ones.
For many people, the
holiday season serves as a
source of rich family
traditions and memories that
last a lifetime. For
seniors, maintaining
traditions and finding ways
to make new memories can be
challenging. At Senior
HelpersŪ we provide our
staff with tips and suggest
activities that can help
them make the holidays
special for our clients.
Below are a few of those
ideas that might enrich the
holidays for a senior in
your family.
Holiday
traditions are worth the
extra effort – it may not be
easy to make arrangements
for Grandma to attend the
midnight mass or family
dinner with everyone, but if
at all possible try to make
it happen. Being part
of longstanding traditions
can mean so much more than a
new sweater.
Holidays mean food – ask
your loved one about
favorite holiday dishes and
secret family recipes and
schedule a day to create
holiday memories together.
‘Tis the season – offer
to assist a senior in
decorating for the holidays.
Many times seniors are not
able to decorate by
themselves and this can
create some holiday blues.
Shop ‘til you drop –
offer to take a senior
shopping for the holidays.
It can be overwhelming to a
senior, but can be a
powerful way to spread some
holiday cheer. If they
are unable to go out, offer
to help them shop online,
through catalogs, or by
making home made gifts.
See the lights – whether
it is going to a place like
the Westmoreland County fairgrounds or just driving
through your favorite
neighborhoods, almost
everyone enjoys seeing the
impressive displays.
Share the traditions and
enjoy the holidays with your
senior loved ones. If you
have questions on this or
any other senior issue,
please contact me at Senior
HelpersŪ. Seasons
Greetings!
