Excela Health Classes

Prepared Childbirth Series

Prepared Childbirth Series covers labor and birth, options for pain control, cesarean birth, postpartum, the normal newborn and breathing/relaxation techniques.

A four-week Monday series begins June 20, 7 to 9 p.m., Latrobe Area Hospital. Five-week Tuesday series begins June 28, 7 to 9:30 p.m., Westmoreland Regional Hospital with a five-week Wednesday series starting June 29, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Room locations vary by date. Please inquire when scheduling.

A weekend series is offered 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., June 4 and 5, Westmoreland Regional Hospital or 6 to 9 p.m., June 10 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 11, Latrobe Area Hospital.

Advanced CPR and First Aid

Those seeking to learn or refresh life-support skills may attend the “Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider” course 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., June 18. The course teaches participants how to administer CPR to victims of all ages, explains the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and provides information about the relief of foreign body airway obstructions.

This program is available to health care employees and to those whom are required to take a health care provider course for their employment. Upon the completion of a written exam and skills demonstration, a course-completion card will be issued.

Heartsaver Infant & Child is scheduled for 6 to 9:30 p.m., June 15. This program is designed to teach CPR and relief of foreign body airway obstruction for infants and children to all lay rescuers such as older school children or family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death. A course completion card will be issued.

A “Heartsaver First Aid” class will occur 12:30-4:30 p.m., June 18. This American Heart Association Course provides students with basic first aid knowledge in an event on an emergency. This course also reviews how to recognize medical injuries. A written and skills exam will be given prior to course completion.

Excela Health Healthy Lifestyles

Excela Health offers healthy lifestyle programs at Latrobe Area Hospital, and through The Well Being Center for Mind/Body Health at Frick and Westmoreland Regional hospitals. The Well Being Center has partnered with Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield to offer real life solutions to wellness challenges through informative, hands-on programs designed to help achieve lifestyle goals and enjoy a healthier, happier life.

Additionally, The Well Being Center provides a host of medically based lifestyle management programs designed to enhance the mind, body and spirit.

Discover Relaxation Within is a four-week lifestyle improvement program that helps individuals identify everyday stressors and learn specific relaxation techniques to reduce and manage stress. The class is facilitated by Helen Keegan-Geroux, LPC, and begins 3 to 4:30 p.m., June 22, at The Well Being Center, Medical Commons One, Westmoreland Regional Hospital.

Take the first steps toward better health by joining a yoga class where participants learn stretching exercise, basic postures, breathing techniques and the philosophy of Hatha Yoga. Yoga is offered every Wednesday, 5:15 to 6:30 p.m., Latrobe Area Hospital Education Center and as a four-week series starting 6 to 7 p.m., June 23, at The Well Being Center, Medical Commons One, Westmoreland Regional Hospital.

A Taste of Ornish

Excela Health offers “A Taste of Ornish,” 6 to 8 p.m., June 27 in the Memorial Conference Center, ground floor, Westmoreland Regional Hospital.

The evening’s keynote speaker is Tom Ljungman, MD, Medical Director, The Well Being Center for Mind/Body Health, who will present New Hope …New Choices. Participants also will hear from The Well Being team regarding Four Components … Countless Health Benefits – nutrition, stress management, exercise and group support. Testimonials from individuals who have experienced success through the Ornish program also will be featured.

Following the formal presentation, guests may sample recipes from The Ornish Program, and talk one-on-one with The Well Being Center professionals and Ornish participants.

The Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease® is a comprehensive lifestyle modification program designed to assist participants in the management of heart disease and address key risk factors associated with its onset and progression. Through healthy lifestyle modification, The Ornish Program teaches participants how to improve their health and well being to live longer and healthier lives.
