Learn about March for Parks, 2009.

One of the advantages of living in Westmoreland County is the pleasure of visiting its many fine parks and recreation areas. The Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks & Recreation maintains four major parks, four additional park and recreation areas, and two trails. There is even an historic site where visitors can step back into Revolutionary times.

Throughout the year, organized events such as Fishing Derbies, Concerts, Antiques & Collectible Sales, Family and Super Fun Days, and Hobgoblin Hikes bring a true sense of community to Westmoreland parks. In July each year, the Westmoreland County Arts and Heritage Festival alone draws 100,000 attendees.

As lifelong residents of Westmoreland County, the owners of InWestmoreland have seen the County maintain a continued investment in improving the parks system, and we never miss a chance to enjoy the outdoors at one of Westmoreland County’s exceptional recreational areas. Over 2,700 acres of land around the county have been set aside for your enjoyment!

On these pages we share our enthusiasm and provide you with the information and links you need to make your experience in Westmoreland County’s parks one you will look forward to repeating again and again.

Major Parks

Westmoreland County’s major parks provide amenities such as pavilions, athletic fields, horseshoe pits, and even airfields for radio controlled model aircraft. There are restroom facilities. At some parks, concessions are available, including food sales and boat or bicycle rentals.

Recreational Areas

Go back to nature in these fine Westmoreland County Parks. While these parks do not have all the amenities of the major parks, the Ann Rudd Saxman Nature Park, Bridgeport Dam, Chestnut Ridge Park, and Sewickley Creek Wetlands Interpretive Area each offer a fine experience including miles of trails and nature study.

Historic Site

Hannas Town Historic Site is an active archeological site with a history dating back before the American Revolution. When visiting Hanna’s Town, you will be greeted by a hostess or guide dressed in colonial era costume and knowledgeable concerning the history and archeology of the site. The reconstructed village consists of Robert Hanna’s Tavern/Courthouse and Jail, three 18th century log houses, a Revolutionary era fort, and a wagon shed housing an authentic Conestoga wagon. A gift shop is available.

Trails

Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation maintains two trails for walking, biking, or cross country skiing. The Five Star Trail passes through Greensburg, Hempfield Township, South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg, and Youngwood. It is associated with the Regional Trail Corporation. The Youghiogheny River Trail, accessible through Cedar Creek Park, is part of a trail system that will eventually link Pittsburgh to Washington DC.
