Old Route 66
Grille Restaurant
Casual dining for families
and couples in a setting
of generous hospitality,
delightful food,
and a
restful atmosphere.
It may seem out of the ordinary to recommend a
restaurant based on its potato chips, especially when that same
dining room serves the best in mouth-watering Black Angus steaks,
scrumptious pasta dishes, and desserts as irresistible as homemade
cheesecake, but such is the case with the Old Route 66 Grille,
located 6 miles north of Greensburg on Business 66. A favorite of
the InWestmoreland staff, we never stop at the Old Route 66 Grille
without beginning our dining adventure with a generous starter of
Homemade Chips and Dip. Made fresh from choice, locally grown
potatoes, the most difficult decision is whether to go with the
warm, blue cheese sauce topping or the more traditional French onion
dip.
Whether it is your first or your fiftieth visit, an attentive staff
makes you feel right at home. Nor are they shy about helping you
make the best choices. The menu ranges from the time-honored steak
and sea dishes to Pasta Puntanesca and Singapore Chicken or Shrimp.
Entrees average in price from $13.66 to $16.66, and a Children's
Menu is available, as are incredible desserts, including homemade
cheesecake and fresh baked fruit pies (served with ice cream). You
may wish to savor an international coffee with your meal, or order a
relaxing drink from the bar.
Many will remember the Old Route 66 Grille as Timothy's nightclub
and lounge, but some eight years ago a transformation took place
under the guidance of partners Harry and Mary Schaab and Mike Kitch.
The focus changed to upscale food and casual dining for families and
couples. A successful move, the business has been growing ever
since. For this interview, we were lucky enough to catch Mike Kitch
in a rare free moment, and we couldn't resist asking him about his
own favorite dishes.
"Well, our most popular item is the "66" sizzler," said Mike, "and I
have to agree. This is a sirloin strip steak, served on a sizzling
platter with our own special blend of garlic butter. All of our
steaks are hand-cut and individually inspected to insure quality.
For the adventurous palate, we have some of the hottest and best
banana peppers available, stuffed with hot sausage and served with
tomato sauce and provolone cheese. They're great."
Of course, there is no reason to limit your visits to dinner only.
The Old Route 66 Grille opens for lunch, Monday through Friday at
11:00 a.m. Wonderful Reubens, steak sandwiches, burgers, and salads
round out a hearty menu. If you are looking for the perfect light
dinner, the Old Route 66 Grille's luncheon menu is served in the
evening as well.
For those on the go, all menu items are available for take out.
Handling private parties and special events is no stretch for the
staff of the Old Route 66 Grille. "We're capable of handling
semi-private events," said Mike, "from birthdays and anniversaries
to showers and baptisms, we've done it all. Our seating capacity in
the dining room alone is 85. We would be glad to take care of you
and make your special event a memorable one."
From the finest steaks to the good-hearted hospitality of its staff,
the Route 66 Grille offers a pleasant dining experience to families
and friends throughout Westmoreland County. Come and give them a
try.
(And no, unfortunately, the Old Route 66 Grille does not sit at the
end of the Historic Route 66, which begins in begins in Los Angeles
and ends in Chicago, but if good food and a great dining experience
are your pleasure, you can still "get your kicks" at The Old Route
66 Grille.)
