H. Arnold Papernick,
Doctor of Optometry
35 Years of Eye Care Excellence
in Mount Pleasant, PA
2004 marks the 35th Anniversary for Dr. H.
Arnold Papernick's optometry practice in Mount Pleasant, PA, yet Dr.
Papernick has no plans to retire, ever! Talk to the doctor for a few
minutes, and you'll hear of his inspiration, a pediatrician named
Leila Denmark who practiced five days a week in Atlanta up to the
age of 102.
"The key is to love what you are doing," Dr. Papernick explains.
"I'm helping people preserve and improve one of their most precious
possessions, their sight." He is quick to follow up with the idea
that he does not merely treat eyes, but takes the whole person and
their general health into account. He has identified patients whose
"eye problem" turned out to be anything from a sinus infection to
cluster headaches, then referred them to the appropriate medical
care. By the same token, you will never find Dr. Papernick's staff
advising a patient they will "just have to get used to" their new
eyewear. If you are uncomfortable, it may take some detective work
to determine the cause, but your satisfaction with the end result is
of the utmost importance.
Over the course of his 35 year practice, Dr.
Papernick has seen many innovations and technical milestones, and
his practice has kept up with them all. From laser surgery to the
latest contact lenses, Dr. Papernick has embraced not only the
newest technology, but the best practices with regard to each.
In talking to Dr. Papernick, we learn for
instance that laser surgery is not for everyone. Patients must have
demonstrably stable vision over several years and healthy, moist
eyes. Before having laser surgery, patients are sometimes fitted
with contacts simulating various outcomes, to determine the optimum
procedure. Alternatively, a new device is sometimes employed by
which the laser maps the eye and simulates surgery on a lens, which
can then be used to test the effect on the patient's vision. No
effort is spared in making certain the work done to correct your
vision is appropriate to your situation. With a good diagnosis and
suitable precautions taken, laser surgery can be an effective
approach to correcting hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia
(nearsightedness), and astigmatism (blurred vision).
Dr. Papernick's office currently provides full
time, primary optometric care for patients of
all ages, including eye exams, glasses, and
contact lenses. They can check for cataracts and
glaucoma, as well as work with diabetic patients
to monitor how diabetes may be affecting their
eyesight. These days, optometrists are licensed
to prescribe medications, such as antibiotics
and steroids for various conditions, including
eye infections. If there is a need for eye
surgery, or other special care, Dr. Papernick's
decades of experience have allowed him to
develop a network of contacts sure to put you in
the best hands.
Practically all forms of insurance are
accepted by Dr. Papernick's office. You need only call to see if
your medical insurance covers your next visit.
If you are looking for a good deal on your
next pair of glasses or contacts, at Dr. Papernick's office they
pride themselves in being able to cater to all price levels. The
difference here is that the staff will be honest with you about what
you are buying, as well as assuring that the product is appropriate
to your needs. Consumers looking for the "cheapest pair of contacts"
from mass market distributors often throw their money away on
inadequate vision care. Contact lenses are a licensed medical device
and require more care than finding a BOGO on a new pair of shoes. In
addition to acquiring quality contacts, there is importance in
proper fitting and follow-up, as well as patient training, from
hygiene and handling to the proper use of solutions. It is the same
with glasses. You want them to look good, and for you to look good
in them, but you don't want parts of the frame to corrode with time,
or for them to irritate your ears and nose. Price is important to
many people in these economic times, but trust Dr. Papernick's
office to provide the best value possible within your budget. They
also offer a wide range of top-of-the-line glasses and contacts for
the discriminating buyer.
Dr. Papernick is a native of Glassport and has
a BA in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh.
After a stint in the Army, he decided to become an optometrist,
returning to Pitt before attending the Pennsylvania College of
Optometry. He opened his practice in Mount Pleasant in 1969. Dr.
Papernick has always loved the area and its mountains, remembering
fondly a cabin his family owned near Yough Lake when he was a child.
Today his office serves patients from Westmoreland, Fayette, and
Somerset counties. People routinely come from as far away as
Uniontown , Pittsburgh, and Ligonier.
General office hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm,
Monday through Friday and 8:30 am to 12:00 Noon on Saturdays. Lunch
time is staggered among the staff, to make sure the office is fully
staffed in case of walk-ins needing their glasses repaired, etc.
Like so many local services in Westmoreland
County, the offices of H. Arnold Papernick, O.D. are worth going out
of your way for. We wish him the best of luck in 2004, his 35th year
of serving the community, and look forward to the possibility of
reporting on his practice, many years from now, on his 100th
birthday.
