Local
Photographer Writes the Book on Video 101
by
Scot Noel
When Ray Adams of Ray Adams Photography and Videography in North
Huntingdon, PA was teaching video in high school, he could not find an
appropriate text book for basic video production. He wanted something
no-nonsense that would, nevertheless, act as a motivator to keep student
interest high. From camera transitions and lighting to editing principles and
career opportunities, Ray Adams knew what he wanted, and he soon realized he
would have to write it.
"I began the project in 1989, but it took until 1992 before the
first edition was ready to publish," said Ray Adams. Thirteen chapters and three
years after starting, he self-published Video 101, A First Course in Video
Production. The book was targeted primarily for students at the high school and
middle school level. All of his work would have been worth it to Ray if the text
book helped his students or encouraged a promising career. At the time, he could
not have anticipated that by 2005 Video 101 would be in its fourth edition and
being used by some 550 schools across the country.
"We even have a website promoting the work, complete with a table of
contents and sample chapter. You can visit it at
www.video101.org."
Ray
Adams has a 31 year history in teaching. From 1964 to 1995, Ray taught at East
Allegheny High School in North Versailles, Pennsylvania. In those days, had
classes in Social Studies and History as well as Photography and Video
Production. In1969, Ray took his love of photography and opened his own home
based photography and video production studio. Ray Adams Photography and
Videography is located at 13470 St. Clair Drive in North Huntingdon, PA. The
studio has been its own success, and Ray and his staff often have their hands
full working on:
- Family Portraits
- Wedding Photos and
Videography
- High School Senior Portraits
- Sports and Special
Events Videography
- Promo Videos, Training Videos, and Sales Videos
-
Cable TV Commercials
- Transferring Home Movies to DVD
- DVD and
CD Duplication
"Video production has really taken off in recent
years," said Ray. "We do a lot of local work, including all of Norwin Football.
We not only provide video for the coaches to review the game, but we create
action highlights for the end of the season. Our studio also provides
Videography services for Greensburg Central Catholic Girl's basketball and we
recently started working with Hempfield boy's soccer."
Ray Adams business
philosophy is to give a fair price and a good product. Unlike many of his
competitors, Ray has no packages that lock the customer into a certain number of
pictures or levels of service. He works with you to meet your needs and
customize his services so that you receive the best value for your money.
Ray also conducts video production workshops for teachers on a
regular basis, including in-service programs dealing with basic video production
techniques. He is proud of his involvement with Robert Morris College in
Pittsburgh and the college's efforts to promote video and television usage in
the schools.
A second degree black belt in Karate, one of Ray's next
projects is to produce instructional martial arts tapes. Considering the success
of Video 101, A First Course in Video Production, we wish Ray Adams the best of
luck in all of his future projects.
