Some
may recall stopping at a barbeque stand along Greengate Road in Greensburg
(near the old Bruster's Ice Creamery) and realizing that the barbeque
selections offered at this little stand were amazing and wishing Chef
Robinson's dishes were available anytime, not just in the summer.
Those culinary desires have now become a reality. Greg Robinson, also
known as Chef Robinson, has opened his own restaurant along Route 30 in
Jeannette, a location featuring a full menu, but where many regulars come
for those exceptional barbeque chicken and ribs. Now all of Chef Robinson's
favorite dishes are available to customers every day of the week all year
long. Along with his wife Cassandra, the two opened the doors to Chef
Robinson's Restaurant on November 15, 2010, in the former Eat n' Park
Diner. Now with nearly 20 employees, the business is booming and growing
more attention each day.
"He had built up a clientele and once he saw the location of the
building, he knew it was the place for him to start his own business," said
Cassandra Robinson of her husband Greg.
The Restaurant's Birth as a Roadside Attraction
For nearly seven years Greg would load a grill into his van with an
attached trailer and head out onto Greengate Road. There he would grill
barbeque chicken and ribs and serve it to customers all day long throughout
the summer months. The portable trailer had a sink, countertop, and
refrigerator. It may not seem like a lot, but that is how Chef Robinson was
made. After years of loyal customers who only knew Chef Robinson's as a
great summer stop along Greengate Road, Greg decided to elaborate his menu
and establish a permanent restaurant location.
While
the exterior of the new restaurant beckons as a classic, old-style diner,
not all the food is diner style. Menu items include meals for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner and they are all mouth-watering selections. For
breakfast, Chef Robinson offers pancakes, eggs, omelets, sausage, bacon,
French toast, bagels, muffins, croissants, and grits.
If you stop by for lunch or dinner you will have the option of ordering
appetizers. Top choices would be the loaded French fries with cheddar
cheese and a scoop of bacon or Kenyata's Signature Pulled Pork sliders. The
pork sliders are worth a visit, all by themselves. These consist of pulled
pork, piled high on four fresh rolls with signature cole slaw and jack
cheese.
Chef Robinson's sandwiches are also popular. The menu lists a variety,
including Chef Robinson's signature Pulled Pork Sandwich, a Big Fish
sandwich, grilled cheese triple, grilled chicken breast, steak and cheese,
burgers, chicken salad, hot roast sandwiches, and hot turkey sandwiches.
One sandwich that stands out is the pork chop sandwich, which is pounded
hand carved pork that is breaded, fried, then served with Texas toast and
gravy.
Pasta is another option on the menu. Choices include pasta with a
meatball, chicken Parmesan, and pasta Alfredo. However, if you are hungry
and ready to eat then you need to take a look at the entrees.
The Barbeque Chicken and Ribs that Started It All
Of course the number one entree is Chef Robinson's barbeque chicken and
ribs that are slow cooked and grilled to perfection and served with your
choice of mild or hot barbeque sauce and two sides. Another selection could
be steak: 10 ounces of USDA strip sirloin grilled exactly the way you want
it. In addition there is surf and turf, shrimp, catfish, meatloaf, pork
chops, salmon, roast beef, and Chef Greg's Cod. There truly is something to
excite anyone's taste in good food.
If you are staying light for your meal there are soups and salads
available as well as whole fresh jumbo wings in your choice of sauce. If
you are interested in trying something different you should order the
Blackened Grilled Salmon Salad. The salad includes Northern Atlantic Salmon
on a bed of crisp iceberg and romaine lettuce with walnuts, granny smith
apples, cranberries and feta cheese, served with raspberry vinaigrette
dressing.
Children are also made more than welcome at Chef Robinson's Restaurant.
The children's menu includes grilled cheese, chicken nuggets that look like
dinosaurs, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, and corndogs. No child will
leave disappointed.
Chef Robinson's Southern flair comes through as he offers homemade sides
which include collard greens, candied sweet potatoes, fried corn, black-eyed
peas, and corn bread. Chef Robinson is also known for his signature side
items, which include loaded baked potatoes, sweet potato fries, and baked
macaroni and cheese.
Seating for Groups
Greg and Cassandra's background have combined to give the business a
great start. Cassandra has worked in the business world while Greg has
always studied and worked in the culinary world. Greg is a graduate of the
Pittsburgh Culinary Institute and has worked as a chef. Despite their roots
in Ohio and Pittsburgh, the Robinsons feel that Westmoreland County is their
home now. They are especially happy with their new location and new career.
