Longtime Pediatrician To Be Honored In Congressional
Record
|
Being entered into the National Congressional Record is just the latest accolade
to be bestowed on Pascal Spino, MD, beloved pediatrician. Initiated by
U.S. Congressman Tim Murphy who will present the proclamation to Dr. Spino at
Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, the statement will be entered into the
Congressional Record to acknowledge his 59 years of medical practice.
In the course of that practice, he has treated scores of patients, often
children and grandchildren of former patients who still marvel at his
compassion, concern and dedication to the well-being of children.
His community involvement has been given quietly, but his achievements have not
gone unnoticed. He has served as a past president of the American Heart
Association, Westmoreland division and the Southwestern Pennsylvania chapter;
was former medical director of the Westmoreland Crippled Children's Society and
the Westmoreland County March of Dimes. He has served on the boards of the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Epilepsy Society and the Westmoreland County
Mental Health Board. He had spent time aboard the SS Hope in Nicaragua and
at a tuberculosis hospital for children in Antigua, Guatemala. Dr. Spino
had also initiated efforts for well baby and dental clinics in the county.
Not seeking awards or acknowledgement, he has been recognized as the 1989
Pediatrician of the Year by the Pennsylvania chapter of the Academy of
Pediatrics; a 1990 Gold Medal awardee sponsored by WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh; the 1994
Outstanding Westmoreland County Italian American sponsored by the Westmoreland
Columbus 500; the 1995 Outstanding Service Award presented by the Central
Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce; the 1998 Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary
Foundation of Rotary International, and the 2001 Distinguished Humanitarian
Award by the Westmoreland County Community College, that recognized him for his
dedication to the care of the area's children.
On staff at Westmoreland Hospital since 1954, he served as chairman of the
Pediatrics Department. In 1990, Westmoreland's special care nursery was
dedicated in his honor.
Dr. Spino still practices, though now with Pediatric Associates of Westmoreland,
located in the Medical Commons One building behind Westmoreland Hospital. |
