“There’s so much stuff in
here I don’t know what to
do.” “Honey, where are the
batteries? I thought we had
a whole bunch of them.”
“Look at this place – we
can’t have anyone come over
when it looks like this.”
These phrases are signs that
clutter is closing in on
your right to the “pursuit
of happiness.” So if you
want to follow in the
footsteps of our founding
fathers, make your own
“Declaration of
Independence” . . . from
clutter and disorganization.
Here’s how:
-
Determine what you want
- and what you don’t.
It’s important to have
clear goals and to know
why you’re starting the
organizing process in
the first place.
-
Identify how close you
are now to those goals.
Knowing the distance
between your current
state “here” and your
desired end result
“there” gives you an
idea of what to do next.
-
Figure out the causes.
It’s hard to fix
something when you don’t
know what’s wrong. Once
you have a “probable
cause” for the clutter
and disorganization, you
can develop a plan to
move ahead.
-
Plot out a plan. Decide
where you will start,
how you will do it, what
your time frame is, and
if you need any tools
and materials.
-
Take action. The first
four steps are great but
are meaningless unless
you act on them. Keeping
your goals in mind,
begin to sort and purge,
and then organize and
establish systems. And
remember, there’s
nothing wrong with
getting help if you
become stuck.
